  We use pingdom to monitor our websites. pingdom uses several monitoring servers accross the world do determine the status of your servers. it was very important for us to know the response times from different continent because we are operating on a world wide user base and need to have acceptable loading times everywhere.
  pingdom can do checks down to every minute (even in the free plan). You can get notified via sms, twitter and of course email. They can do ping checks but also email server checks and http checks. You can also check if a given data (e.g. string) appears on your site, which was also very important for us, when chosing pingdom.
  We tried a lot of monitoring services and pingdom was by far the most reliable and fastest one to respond on downtimes.
